Tell you what happens when the ignition switch is damaged

What Does My Car’s Ignition Switch Do?

Your car’s ignition switch, starter switch, or start switch is essential to keeping your vehicle on the road. It has an important role in activating the main electrical systems of the vehicle. Without a working ignition switch, you might notice that your car refuses to start or you might not be able to operate the radio or power windows.

Usually, the ignition switch requires a key. Once the key is placed in the ignition, it can be turned to start the car. However, in newer makes and models, the key is sometimes replaced with a button. Regardless of whether your car has a key or a button, both pressing the button or turning the key does the same thing. It sends a signal to your vehicle to begin the ignition process.

When you put the key into the keyhole, you should be able to turn the key all the way. That action will start the car. Alternatively, you can use the key to turn off your engine or put your car into accessory mode.

There are four positions for your car’s ignition switch:

  • 1st Position: Lock
This is essentially the “off” position. Your accessories, like the radio, won’t work and your key may be removed from the keyhole. Your steering wheel may also be locked.
  • 2nd Position: Accessory
In accessory mode, you will be able to use your accessories, like the radio. You won’t be able to remove your key from the keyhole.
  • 3rd Position: On
This position turns on all of your accessories and electronics. You won’t be able to remove your key from the keyhole. The key in the keyhole will also default to this position after you crank the engine.
  • 4th Position:  Start
If you turn your key all the way, your key will be in this position. This will turn on your engine and all of your accessories. WARNING: If you hold your key in this position for too long, it can damage your starter.

Signs Of A Faulty Ignition Switch

There are plenty of signs that you are dealing with a faulty ignition switch. If you think you have a problem with your ignition switch or your car’s starter, then you need to get it checked out by a professional. Keep reading to see all of the common signs of a faulty ignition switch.

  1. Car Won’t Start
If you turn your key and the car attempts to start, but fails, then you might have a broken ignition switch. A mobile mechanic, like the ones at Wrench, is a great option if you find that your car won’t start because they will bring the shop to your location.
  2. Key Won’t Turn
If you put your key in the keyhole, but it gets stuck and won’t turn to the “start” position, then there could be an issue with your car’s ignition switch. If your key won’t turn, then your car will most likely refuse to start as well. This is a huge inconvenience, so get your car checked out as soon as possible.
  3. Car Stalls
You car might stall right after you start it, or it may stall after you have been driving. If your key is at the “on” position and fails, then your vehicle will start and then stall. Either way, this could indicate an issue with your ignition switch.
  4. No Noise From The Starter
If you turn the key and you don’t hear any noise, that is a sign that something is wrong. When you turn your key, you should hear your car start. If there is no noise, this could be due to a blocked electrical pathway. This could also be caused by a dead battery, so it is important to have your car checked out by a professional.
  5. Dashboard Lights Flicker
This is the least common symptom for a bad ignition switch, but it can happen. If you notice that your dashboard lights are flickering when your vehicle is in motion, this could indicate there’s a problem with your ignition switch.
